65. The Digital Drain: Reclaiming Peace from Pings
In this episode of EdYouWell, we’re talking about something many teachers feel but rarely name: digital fatigue. Technology can feel like we’re always on call, even when we’re supposed to be off the clock. This episode unpacks what it means to live and work in an "always-on" culture, how it affects us emotionally, and most importantly, what we can do about it.
☑️ What to Expect:
The Digital Drain Is Real
Teachers are expected to be accessible all day long. It’s not uncommon to check messages during lunch, on prep, or even at home in the evening. We often feel like if we don’t keep up with the inbox, something will slip. But this constant checking pulls our focus and keeps us from being fully present in the moment we’re in.
Notifications Carry Weight
Those little pings and alerts might seem harmless, but they can instantly trigger stress. Even before reading a message, our minds begin guessing what it might say—and how we’ll need to respond. This can create a low-level tension that builds throughout the day. Sometimes, just seeing a name pop up on your screen is enough to pull you out of rest mode.
Boundaries Are Not Just Allowed—They’re Necessary
It’s okay to delay your response or even opt out of certain platforms if they aren’t serving you. Simple shifts, such as checking email at set times, silencing notifications after hours, or turning off message alerts on weekends, can make a huge difference. You can also let others know what your communication windows are. Small boundaries like these help create more mental space and energy for the things that matter most.
💧Well Wishes:
Just because someone can message you doesn’t mean you have to answer right away. Give yourself permission to slow the scroll and return when you’re ready. Protecting your time is not selfish, it’s what allows you to keep showing up with heart.
